Step 1: Assess the Crack

Before buying materials or starting repairs, understand what you are dealing with.

Hairline surface crack: A crack you can feel with a fingernail but has not fully penetrated the tub wall. Very common, easy to repair.

Chip or gouge: A piece of the surface has broken away, leaving a depression. Requires filler to build up the surface before finishing.

Through-crack with flex: Push gently on both sides of the crack. If the tub wall flexes, the crack goes all the way through. This type requires reinforcement from below (fiberglass cloth patch on the underside) in addition to the surface repair.

Spider cracks or multiple cracks in the tub floor: Often indicate a support problem. The tub floor needs support underneath before any surface repair will hold. Inject expanding foam through a small hole drilled in the overflow plate area, or call a plumber to evaluate the support structure.

If the crack is a simple hairline or chip with no flex, proceed with the surface repair below.


Step 2: Clean and Dry the Surface

A repair that fails almost always fails because of poor preparation. The filler must bond to clean, dry, oil-free fiberglass — not to soap scum, mildew, or moisture.

  1. Scrub the entire repair area with a bathroom cleaner to remove soap scum and body oils. Rinse thoroughly.
  2. Wipe the repair area with acetone or denatured alcohol on a clean rag. This removes any remaining oil, wax, or cleaning product residue.
  3. Allow the surface to dry completely — at least 24 hours. If you are in a hurry, use a heat gun on the lowest setting held 6 inches away to drive out moisture. The surface should feel warm and completely dry to the touch.
  4. Apply painter’s tape around the repair area, leaving a margin of about an inch around the damage. This protects the surrounding surface and gives you a clean edge to work to.

Step 3: Prepare the Crack for Filling

Filler bonds better to a roughened surface than to a smooth one. This step also prevents the crack from continuing to grow.

  1. Using 220-grit sandpaper, lightly sand the area inside the tape border. You are not trying to remove material — just scratching the surface so the filler has tooth to grip.
  2. For a hairline crack, use a sharp tool (utility knife or scratch awl) to open the crack very slightly along its length. A crack that is too tight will trap air and the filler will not fully penetrate. Opening it to about 1/16 inch gives the filler room to seat properly.
  3. Wipe the sanded area again with a fresh rag dampened with acetone to remove all dust. Let it dry for ten minutes before proceeding.

Step 4: Mix and Apply the Filler

Follow the specific instructions on your repair kit, as mixing ratios and working times vary. General process:

  1. Squeeze equal parts of the two-part filler (resin and hardener) onto a disposable surface or mixing card.
  2. Mix thoroughly for two to three minutes. Under-mixing leaves soft spots. The mixed filler should be uniform in color with no streaks.
  3. Add the tint drops (included in the kit) to approximately match your tub color. Mix again.
  4. Using the plastic spreader, press the filler firmly into the crack or chip. Work it in with a back-and-forth motion to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Overfill the repair slightly — the filler shrinks slightly as it cures, and you will sand it flush in the next step. Build up in thin layers (1/8 inch at a time) for deeper chips rather than applying one thick layer, which cures unevenly.
  6. Smooth the surface with the spreader, feathering the edges outward.
  7. Allow the filler to cure fully — most kits specify 2 to 4 hours at room temperature. The repair is ready to sand when it is firm to the touch and does not dent under finger pressure.

Step 5: Sand Smooth

  1. Remove the painter’s tape.
  2. Using 220-grit sandpaper, sand the cured filler flush with the surrounding tub surface. Work in small circular motions. Check your progress frequently by running a finger across the repair — you are looking for a perfectly flat surface with no bump or ridge.
  3. Switch to 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper (use it wet) and sand the repair and a 2-inch margin around it. This final sand blends the edges and creates the right surface texture for the finish coat.
  4. Wipe away all dust with a damp cloth and allow to dry.

Step 6: Apply the Finish Coat

The finish coat seals the repair and provides the color and sheen that makes it blend with the rest of the tub.

  1. If your kit includes a spray finish, shake the can for one full minute.
  2. Apply the finish coat in thin, even passes. Two thin coats look better than one thick coat. Hold the can 10 to 12 inches away from the surface.
  3. If applying a brush-on finish, use a foam brush for the smoothest result. Apply with long, even strokes and avoid going back over areas that have started to tack.
  4. Allow the finish to cure for the time specified on the kit (usually 24 hours) before using the tub.

Step 7: Buff and Seal

Once the finish is fully cured:

  1. Buff the repair area lightly with a soft cloth to bring up the sheen and blend the finish with the surrounding surface.
  2. Apply a thin coat of fiberglass or acrylic tub wax (or a generic car wax) to the entire tub surface. This protects both the repair and the surrounding finish and gives the tub a uniform appearance.

Preventing Future Cracks

  • Use a non-slip bath mat with suction cups inside the tub rather than a rigid bath insert, which can create localized pressure points.
  • If you are dropping items into the tub (shampoo bottles, soap dishes), swap to lightweight plastic versions.
  • If multiple cracks continue to appear near the tub drain or center floor, have a plumber verify the support beneath the tub is intact.
